R&D Funding
Each year the federal government invests more than $2.0 billion in small
businesses that conduct cutting-edge research. The Small Business
Innovation (SBIR) program is a competitive grant program that encourages
small businesses to provide innovative solutions for the government’s
technological needs. It funds high-risk projects at the earliest stages of
development--before companies can attract traditional investment. Terms are
extremely favorable, and the industry partner keeps the commercial rights to
any resulting patents.
The SBIR program is designed for those companies who have engineers and
scientists interested in being technology leaders. SBIR funded companies
are able to pursue revolutionary technology--sometimes considered too risky
to pursue with limited internal funding. The profile of a typical company,
that is successful in the SBIR program, is less than 20 years old and
employs less than 150 employees. The company focuses on production of a
limited number of products and has an R&D department with an above average
budget.
R&D Solutions encourages utilization of currently available DoD
resources by the private sector to create innovative solutions for DoD
through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and other R&D funding
programs. Specific objectives of the program include the following:
·
Create awareness of the SBIR/STTR programs in the region to stimulate
interest in the DoD programs.
·
Partner with and leverage existing SBIR/STTR outreach and support
efforts in the region to maximize impact of this program.
·
Provide the necessary proposal development support to qualified small
businesses who are interested in the DoD programs.
·
Utilize the SBIR/STTR conferences, outreach and support
efforts to stimulate interest in Patent License Agreements or other DoD
partnerships.
